'True Lies' comes from Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band’s 1997 album Trouble Is…, one of the records that helped establish Shepherd as a major modern blues-rock artist.

What we’ll cover in this workshop

In this monthly workshop we look at the slow blues/rock bass line from 'True Lies' to explore timing, note length, fills, tone and dynamics in a real musical context.

What you'll learn:

  • Lock in the core groove
  • Understand the form of the song
  • Play a gig-ready version of the line
  • Add tasteful fills and variations
  • Improve muting, articulation and phrasing.

  • I'll show you a simplified version if you are struggling with the original bass line

How this particular workshop runs

  • Session 1 – Learn the Line:
    form, core line, timing, note length, simplified and full versions.

  • Session 2 – Lock It In:
    fills, articulation, dynamics, tone, and full-song play-through.

You'll get the follow download materials:

  • PDF TAB/notes for the line.

  • Slow and full‑speed original tracks minus bass to practise with.

  • Replay access to both sessions if you can’t be there live.

No fancy tech needed – if you can join a normal Zoom call, you’re ready.

The workshops will be presented by myself, and if you don't know me yet, I'm Greg Hagger, a professional bass player, educator. and creator of Greg's Bass Shed.

I concentrate on teaching bass players real life-skills, with a focus on feel and confidence, rather than speed, or flashing, busy playing.

Whether you're a bedroom player, attend jam sessions or a seasoned musician, you'll get a lot our of these sessions and have fun at the same time.
