GBS Theory Workshop No.9 – Latin Jazz Bass Lines

For bass players who know basic walking and blues, but want Latin charts to stop feeling like guesswork.

When a chart says “swing” or “blues,” most bass players have a fair idea what to do. But when it says “Latin,” a lot of players suddenly feel much less certain. Should you play a tumbao? A bossa line? A 2‑feel? A vamp? This two‑part workshop is designed to take that uncertainty away.

In Workshop No.9 we’ll use real Latin jazz standards – including Blue Bossa, Song for My Father, Afro Blue and Spain – to show you what the bass actually does in this style. You’ll learn how to build practical bossa/2‑feel, tumbao‑style, vamp‑based and light 4‑feel bass lines that work on real tunes, without getting buried in theory.

By the end of the workshop you’ll have a small but reliable Latin jazz bass toolbox: patterns and concepts you can reuse any time a chart says “Latin.” As always, the focus is on clear explanation, shapes on the neck, counting, groove and play‑along application, with notation/tab and replays included.
